Group Affiliation: Former member of the Defenders, the Star Masters
Base of Operations: Formerly Earth, Galactus' World-Ship
First Appearance: FANTASTIC FOUR #48

History: The noble Norrin Radd was a member of an extremely long-lived race of humanoid aliens who had achieved a virtual utopia on the planet Zenn-La, eradicating disease, poverty, war, and all others ocial ills. Growing discontent with his life of idle hedonism, Radd recognised that his culture was becoming stagnant. In his mind, men could only find fufillment in quest, yearning, and struggle. Set apart from other Zenn-Lavians by his belief in a better world, Radd alone saw through his people's false sense of security -- which was shattered by the arrival of the devourer of worlds, Galactus. Radd implored Zenn-La's Counsil of Scientists to provide him with a spacecraft so he could rondezvous with Galactus and broker peace.

Galactus meant no malice, but only by draining Zenn-La's life-energies could he satiate his awesome hunger. Having searched for sustenance too long to begin anew, Galactus mused that a herald would enable him to spare populated planets such as Zenn-La by scouting out suitable worlds for him to consume. In exchange for Zenn-La's protection, Radd selflessly agreed to serve Galactus, and to help him find suitable worlds for his master to devour. His body restructured by Galactus to suit such tasks, Radd became the Silver Surfer, and set our immediately to locate a lifeless planet upon which Galactus could feed. The Surfer discharged his duties with great efficiency thereafter, providing himself with as much time as possible to delight in the wonders of the universe. However, the task of finding energy-rich planets devoid of sentient beings became increasingly difficult, and Galactus had gone for an extended period of time without nourishment when the Surfer entered Earth's solar system.

While Galactus prepared to absorb the planet's life energy, the blind sculptress Alaicia Masters attempted to convince the Surfer that the beauty inherent in life on Earth was worth preserving. Moved by Alicia's words, the Surfer stood with the Fantastic Four against his master. Forced to spare Earth when Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) found Galactus' Ultimate Nullifier, the world-devourer still managed to punish his insubordinate herald by erecting an energy barrier that prevented the Surfer from leaving the planet. Despite his longing to travel through outer space and his desperate attempts to escape the Earth, the Surfer proved unable to breach Galactus' barricade for many years. During his time on Earth, the Surfer learned to love life in all its forms. At times horrified by man's inhumanity to his fellow man, he nonetheless came to appreciate the human struggle, and their potential for greatness.

The Surfer eventually escaped his exile on Earth with the aid of Reed Richards, only to discover that Galactus had exacted the ultimate revenge for his subordinate's betrayal by devastating Zenn-La. Bearing a heavy burden in his heart for the loss of his former home and the life he once knew, Radd now freely soars the spaceways as a universal protector. Seeking wonder in the vast reaches of the cosmos, he returns regularly to Earth because of his close ties to the people and places of his adopted homeworld. Although he is often greatly distressed by mankind's behavior, the Surfer has developed great sympathy for the morally upright members of the Human race. The Surfer has allied himself with the Fantastic Four and other's among Earth's native superhuman champions, including the Defenders and the Avengers.

Through the years, the somewhat innocent and trusting Surfer has encountered forces, both otherworldly and earthly, that have sought to break his noble spirit and enslave him to their will. Doctor Doom, Mephisto, Thanos, and many others have tried time and again to subvert the Surfer's power and soul, but always, the power of truth prevails --- and he finds himself free once more to explore the stars.

Height: 6' 4"
Eyes: White
Weight: Unknown
Hair: None
Skin: Covered in a flexible, nigh-indestructible, silvery material

Strength level: The Silver Surfer possesses superhuman strength, which he can further enhance by cosmic energy to a level rivaling that of the Savage Hulk. This level of strength allows him to lift (press) over 100 tons.

Known superhuman powers: The Silver Surfer possesses vast cosmic power granted him by Galactus. He has the ability to absorb and tap ambient cosmic energy into his body at will, and expel those energies violently, or in more subtle ways. He can channel beams of energy through his hands with sufficient destructive force to level a large city, or weild the energies with such finesse as to restructure the molecules of the natural dyes within a plant to change its color. The Surfer can rearrange matter to create other configurations, but he cannot transmute elements (such as turning lead into gold). This comic energy also sustains him, and thus the Surfer has no need for air, food, or water. His brain, however, still occasionally requires sleep, although not as often as humans do.

The Surfer's silvery "skin" was designed to easily withstand the rigors of deep-space travel, and thus far, it has proven to be virtually indestructible. In fact, his entire body was made highly resistant to injury, and he is thus almost invulnerable to most types of physical harm. He can easily withstand great extremes in temperature, and is unbothered by the friction associated with atmospheric re-entry, and he can even withstand a brief plunge into the surface of an average star. He also routinely weathers the stresses associated with high-speed travel through space, AND hyperspace.

The Surfer's senses were also enhanced by Galactus, which allow him far-ranging vision, and hearing, and the ability to detect fields, traces, and concentrations of energy, and discern their natures. He also has an affinity for the life-energies of living beings, and can use his cosmic energies to boost the natural healing powers of a wounded individual, even if they are near-death. He cannot, however, raise the dead.

Source of Superhuman Powers: Transformed by Galactus

Abilities: As Norrin Radd, the Surfer was a scientist, a dreamer, and something of a philosopher. Skills which he sometimes finds quite useful. The Surfer, however, is something of a poor hand-to-hand combatant, depending almost entirely upon his cosmic powers in battle.

Transportation: When flying, the Surfer uses a construct which resembles an earthly surfboard. This "board" is coated with the same silvery material that coats the Surfer's body, thus making the board almost indestructable. Few forces aside from the power cosmic itself can affect it, and if it is somehow damaged, the Surfer can easily repair it in an instant. The board is psionically linked with the Surfer's mind in some unknown fashion, and it follows his commands instantly. It apparently taps cosmic energy in much the same fashion as the Surfer himself, and although the Surfer could likely use the power cosmic to fly without his board, the construct enables him to do so without expending any of his own energy. The board allows the Surfer to fly at Mach 10 (ten times the speed of sound) within the outer layers of a planet's atmosphere, 99% of the speed of light in space itself, and at much higher velocities in hyperspace.
