Thanos Merchandise

"Big guns my purple butt. Wait 'till Castle gets a load of THIS baby!"
Yup, Thanos STUFF! We fans of the Mad Titan want Thanos stuff, and lots of it. But, as fate would have it, there's not a whole heck of a lot of it out there, despite his popularity in the early 90's. His prominence in the Silver Sufer Animated Series gave me hope, but unfortunately, the series only lasted one season, and thus the figure line based on the show spawned just a single Thanos figure.
One thing there's quite a few of, is Thanos trading-cards, thanks to the various Marvel card sets produced over the years. There are also a few cards from Marvel's OverPower Collectable card Game. To keep track of all those cards, I've created a Thanos card checklist & gallery. We've also seen several great new items in recent years, like the Marvel Select Thanos figure, and two Thanos statues: One from Art asylum and the other from Bowen Studios.
eBay is a great place to find Thanos items. Its a reall boon to the collector, and I advise any of you would-be Thanos item-hoarders to check eBay on a regular basis.
So, just what IS out there? Here's a list of what I know of. You can click on the images for larger versions:
Infinity War poster by Ron Lim
This came out in 1992, and would be hard to come across now.

Thanos vs Silver Surfer poster by Claudio Castallini
This came out just a few years ago, and can still be found in comic outlets on occasion. The artwork was originally created by Castallini for the gatefold cover of Cosmic Powers Unlimited #1.
|
|
Silver Surfer and Thanos poster by Tim Hilderbrandt
This came out just a few years ago, and can still be found in comic outlets as well. It's a VERY nice poster!
|
|
Thanos action figure from the Fantastic Four line by Toy Biz
This can still be found in the secondary market. Its rather nice, despite being a figure produced somewhat early in Toy Biz's history.
|
|
Thanos PVC miniature by Applause
This item is somewhat rare, and was one in a whole series of marvel PVCs produced by the company in the 1990's.
|
|
Thanos lapel/tie Pin by Marvel Planet Studios
This neat lapel-pin is based off of an image of Thanos from the pages of Infinity Gauntlet #1. The pin is metal with enamel details and a clear coating. Its durable, and attractive. The pin was released in 1990.
|
|
Thanos Button by Billboard Buttons
This came out as part of the promotion for The Infinity Gauntlet, and features artwork from the cover of issue #1.
|
|
Marvel Tie by Cartoon Corner
This is a really neat tie, that features Thanos, Thor and Iron Man set against a space backdrop containing Galactus' World-Ship. The shell is 100% silk, with a synthetic lining, and thus, it requires dry-cleaning if ya get it dirty. I'm not quite sure when it was produced, but guessing early to mid 90's is a pretty safe bet.

|
Thanos Magnet
Issued in 1996 by Marvel Characters Inc, this magnet is the size of a Trading Card, and features Thanos, with the Silver Surfer in the background. It looks good on the fridge.

Thanos Statue
This is an interesting item I know very little about, and I'm not sure if its licensed by Marvel. This item was evidently sold in Brazil a few years back, and occasionally pops up on eBay from time to time. The quality of the sculpting is good, if not wonderful. Thanos stands on a gray, stony base adorned with skulls, and wears the Infinity Gauntlet on his left hand.

|
Thanos figure from the Silver Surfer animated line
These figures can still be found at closeout prices at a few retail outlets, but not often. Your best bet? eBay of course. The figure comes with a big-honkin' gun, and a light-up projectile blast. You also get Thanos' big, pointy finger for no extra charge!
|
|
Thanos vs Adam Warlock 2-Pack
These figures were part of "Marvel's Greatest Moments" by Toy Biz. The Thanos figure is a recast from the SS Animated mold. The left hand was tinkered with, giving Thanos the Infinity Gauntlet. His paint scheme was altered, changing the orange to a rather annoying yellow with gold trim. Warlock is a repaint of the rather crappy Quicksilver figure from a few years back. If you ask me, its worth it if you can get it for less than 8 bucks, as finding versions with decent paint-jobs can be difficult. Still available at most comic outlets, and online.

Thanos mini-bust by Bowen Designs
Randy Bowen has turned out some fabulous mini-busts and statues over the past few years. Some of those include Thor, Colossus, the Vision, and Dr. Doom. The 6" Thanos mini-bust was sculpted by Seth Vandable, and is made of cold-cast porcelain, and the base features real semi-precious crystals representing the infinity gems. This recent release from Bowen Designs is priced around $60-$70 at some comic outlets and online retailers, but can be found for quite a bit less on eBay.

Thanos Unique Hero-Clix figure, # 141
This is one of the coolest Thanos items to come down the pike in years. Hero Clix is a new game from the makers of the wildly popular Mage Knight. Hero Clix is a click-based miniatures game. All the stats for each character are located on the base of each miniature. The Thanos miniature is regarded as the most powerful character in the first edition of miniatures. For more info, visit the Whiz Kids website. Wanna get one? You may be able to find one at your local shop, but finding one online is easier, and probably cheaper.

Thanos - Infinity Gauntlet Statue
A simply AWESOME statue, created by by Eli Livingston, and Ken Usanami, of Art Asylum this 14" sculpture was released this past summer, and recreates the epic moment when Thanos kills off half of the universe in the pages of The Infinity Gauntlet. Thanos comes mounted on a cosmic stone base with a startling, effect built in: Thanos appears to be floating in space with an expanse of stars stretching out beneath him. Limited to just 2,500 pieces worldwide, each statue comes with a certificate of authenticity. Its becoming harder and harder to find via online retailers. If your local shop doesn't have one, your best bet is eBay. Click here to view the display poster.

Thanos Mask
In what is most definitely a very cool item, costumer Matt Geuther has created a set of Marvel character masks. Each one is molded from sculpts done by Geuther himself, and each one is quite cool. As you can see over on the right, one of the available masks is Thanos himself. The masks are featured at maskmasters.com.

Thanos from Marvel Minimates
This diminutive, long-delayed figure finally saw the light of day at Comicon-International in San Diego, where it was offered up as an exclusive, packaged with the Silver Surfer, as originally intended. |
Thanos figure from Marvel Select
The highly-anticipated Thanos figure from Diamond's Marvel Select line has finally hit the shelves in most areas. Sculpted by Phil Ramirez, this is easily the best Thanos figure ever produced. It stands over 8-inches in height, and boasts 18-points of articulation. Thanos also comes with a spare Infinity Gauntlet hand, and a Death figurine to keep him company.
The figure will set you back to the tune of $18.99 or so, and if you can't acquire one at a nearby shop, then feel free to poke around online

Thanos statue from Bowen Studios
Here is the official info on the statue:
"Randy Bowen and the Shiflett Brothers present the ultimate depiction of the mad titan, Thanos - the alien warlord who loved Death so much, he killed half the universe to impress her! Standing over 15' tall, Thanos stands with the Infinity Gauntlet raised threateningly, ready to wreak havoc on a galactic scale. This statue is made from cold cast resin, and is painted and ready for display."

Online Ordering
Here are a few items that you can order online if you can't find them locally. I urge you to look around at your local shops first, as you should always support your local comic shop...unless its a really sucky one.
