History: Gamora was the sole survivor of the alien humaniod race called the Zen-Whoberis, a peace-loving people who refused to convert to the doctrines of the Universal Church of Truth, a zealous religious order seeking to establish a galaxy-wide empire. Agents of the Church called the Grand Inquuisitors herded the entire population of the planet into a large valley and exterminated them for their resistance. The mad Titanian named Thanos rescued the infant Gamora and brought her through time to a period at least two decades prior to her people's deaths. Aboard his space station Sanctuary, Thanos raised Gamora, training her to become a superb athlete and master assassin. Thanos also subtly altered her mind so she would not recognize the evil of the deeds he intended to have her commit on his behalf.
Thanos planned to send Gamora to assassinate his enemy the Magus, who was both the leader of the Universal Church of Truth and an alternate future self of Adam Warlock. In the meantime he dispatched her to practice her craft of assassination against the Grand Inquisitors who would (in the alternate future she came from) one day kill her people.
Thanos hoped that the presence of a non-contemporary element like Gamora inserted into the Magus's present would distrupt his opponent's plans and thus lead to a different future than the one Thanos had glimpsed from which Gamora had come. Gamora's presence was detected by the Magus, however, who thwarted her attempt to assassinate him. She did, however, assist Adam Warlock in his battle against his evil future self.
Following the Magus's defeat, Gamora returned to her master Thanos and eventually learned of his ultimate goal: the destruction of the stars and of all life in the universe. Horrified, she tried to slay Thanos with a dagger but Thanos instead mortally injured her and left her for dead. Adam Warlock found the dying Gamora, who warned him of Thanos's intent to bring about the death of all living things in the universe. Warlock used his soul-gem to absorb her spirit (or consciousness) into it. For a time, Gamora's spirit form dwelled in peace and contentment in the verdant pocket-dimension entered through the gem, along with the spirits of Adam Warlock, his friend Pip the Troll and a host of others.
However, when Mistress Death resurrected the Mad Titan, Thanos... duty would call Gamora once more. Gamora spent years in Soul World with Adam and Pip the Troll until they returned to life to save the universe from Thanos once more. Following this, Gamora became one of the Infinity Watch, entrusted with the Time Gem. Gamora resigned from the Watch shortly before it disbanded.
