And so my story begins. I awoke in the Chamber of Mistress Death, my one and only love. She had resurrected me with an incredible task at hand : the annihilation of one half of the sentient beings in the universe. I did not apprehend her request, but I did fear failure. I needed to greatly augment my strength or my plight might take a lifetime. After gazing into the depths of the Infinity Well, I conceived of a method to win over Mistress Death's icy heart. My eyes beheld the best kept secret in the history of creation. With the six infinity gems in hand, I would be god. Only then could I set forth and fulfill Mistress Death's wish.
 The six gems (soul, power, time, space, reality, and mind) were distributed among the Elders, an ancient race of nearly immortal beings with great powers all their own. The first gem I sought was in the possession of the In-Betweener. He was out of favor with Lord Chaos and Master Order and was imprisoned in an energy sphere at the nexus of reality. I convinced the In-Betweener that I chafed in the service of Mistress Death and was seeking a new protector. We agreed to pit our combined might against his prison. The results were explosive. Of course, as soon as the In-Betweener was freed, he attempted to use his cosmic might against me. However, Lord Chaos and Master Order only allowed his powers to function within his cell. I took the soul gem from him and left him to their mercy.
