The Vampire King The Big Bad - Season 2 The head of the newly born Vampire council that leads the reformed Order of Aurelius, Varnae is the oldest Vampire on record, far older than Dracula, the Master, the Prince of Lies, and even older than Kakistos was rumored to be. He is so ancient that his Vampiric-features greatly resemble the demon that originally created the first Vampires. Though he has slumbered, presumed dead, for over 1000 years, his power is immense. His name is so feared, respected, and regarded in Vampiric and even demonic circles, that he is usually only spoken of in hushed whispers. Many younger vampires believe him to be nothing more than a myth, but even so, they eventually come to respect the power of his name. Varnae's own origins are lost to antiquity, and he's never been particularly forthcoming in that area. However, he often spoke highly of the Godlike Elder-Demon known as Chthon, who is rumored to have been the progenitor of all Vampires. As for Varnae's own habits, he was typically very choosy about whom he sired and why. Kakistos may to be one of his offspring, but Varnae has never confirmed or denied this. The deeds attributed to Varnae are particularly brutal. He was known to slaughter entire towns and villages, draining the blood from every man, woman, and child he found in order satisfy his tremendous thirst. He was particularly nasty towards his enemies, and it is said that he has destroyed entire battalions of soldiers throughout the many ages of man, including legions of Sumerian, Hittite, Egyptian, Macedonian, Roman, and Chinese soldiers. Many demon-fighting warriors and mercenaries throughout the ages have attempted to make names for themselves by killing Varnae, and all of them eventually failed. He was the first "Beast" that the Knights of Byzantium declared war against, and they finally tracked him down and fought him in the mountains of Turkey in the year 993 A.D., but even they could not truly kill him. They immobilized him and entombed him inside a granite crypt, buried deep in a mountainside, the interior of which was engraved and covered in holy symbols. The crypt was uncovered by an earth-tremor following the destruction of Sunnydale's Hellmouth, and was finally found by Drusilla, who's visions had compelled her to re-form he Order of Aurelius and seek Varnae's tomb. Once there, she and her small-but-powerful band of Vampires managed to gain egress into the crypt, and awakened Varnae with an offering of their own co-mingled blood. From there, Varnae and the others travelled to Prinz Brandt's home, the Castle Ruhiges Schloss, and used it as their headquarters. Varnae, now the Order's head, announced his intentions to see the Order's original goal realized at last: the restoration of the Old Ones, the original demonic overlords of the Earth. He and his council devised new ways to achieve this lofty goal, and they decided to bolster their forces by attacking and turning highly-trained soldiers and agents, and thus build a small army of highly-trained and deadly Vampire troops. Now, Varnae has his council of Vampire elders, and an army of troops at his command. With them, he plans to reshape the world into a terrifying new image.
Despite his usual measured approach, Varnae does indeed have another side to his personality. When the Knights of Byzantium managed to track him down, they caught him in the midst of slaughtering and draining the residents of a small, Turkish village. Their scribes made an account of the subsequent battle, and described Varnae as being "frenzied, like a rabid wolf". This particular report also echoes similar statements made in the past by survivors of his feeding orgies. It seems that when Varnae feeds in this fashion, he becomes like a shark in the midst of a feeding frenzy. Approaching him in such a state would likely be a lethal proposition. Fortunately, its not the norm.
Worse still, his Vampiric weaknesses are greatly diminished. He has long since grown immune to the lethal effects of the sun, although he isn't as powerful in its light. As the Knights of Byzantium found out, staking will not kill him outright, but merely weaken and eventually immobilize him. Holy symbols are nothing but an incovenience, and can only stagger him if the person wielding the symbol truly believes in the power of said object. He also has the power to mesmerize his foes, and possesses a great deal of arcane knowledge and ability, much of it gained in times long lost to history. Because of his greatly-diminished weaknesses, Varnae seems to be nigh-unkillable. What it will take to finally destroy him remains a frustrating mystery.
