Created Artifacts
Here are some of the artifacts I've created/adapted for use with the cinematic Unisystem.
The Slayer Scythe
The mysterious, powerful Slayer-Scythe is an ancient weapon, forged in pre-history by a sect of white-haired women called Guardians. Very little is known of the Guardians, aside from the fact that they were powerful mystics with near-infinite patience and an ability to think in the long-term. It is likely that the Guardians were agents of the Powers that Be.
Centuries ago, the Scythe was forged by the Guardians somewhere in the eastern hemisphere. It was imbued with subtle, yet powerful, mystical energies... energies which made the Scythe a weapon intended for the Slayers. Its creation was a closely-guarded secret, for the Guardians did not wish the Scythe to fall under the influence of the Shadow-Men, who had created the Slayers with dark, demonic power. While the Shadow-Men had good intentions in the most basic sense, they were also fearful and controlling, and the potential for the powers of the Scythe to be abused was high, and the time for the Slayers towield this weapon had not yet arrived.
After its creation, the Scythe was brought to the Western Hemisphere by a group of the Guardians, and on the land where Sunnydale would be built centuries later, the Scythe was used to slay the last pure demon that walked the Earth. Once that was done, the Guardians embedded the Scythe in a body of solid, volcanic rock and then built a small temple underground, and there they hid... waiting. Centuries passed, and as each Slayer died, another was called. The Shadow-Men became the Watchers, who forgot about the Guardians entirely, and thus forgot that they too were being Watched. And so, the handful of Guardians that remained continued their silent vigil, waiting for the day when the Scythe, and its powers, would truly be needed again.
Eventually, that day came. A Slayer named Buffy Summers freed the Scythe from the rock in which it was embedded. She immediately sensed itspower... power which frightened even Caleb, the twisted, mysoginistic right-hand of the first evil who had been granted godlike strength and toughness by his timeless master. Caleb had found the weapon with the aid of an inscription secreted in a Sunnydale monastery. However, the inscription also infuriated him. It read:
Non tibi est. Ei solae tractare licet ("It is not for thee. It is for her alone to wield")
A bit later, Buffy came across the Pyramid-like temple of the Guardians, which had emerged from the Earth on the grounds of Sunnydale's cometary. There, Buffy found the last remaining Guardian. She told Buffy a little of who they were, and how they desired to help and protect her. But, before she was done speaking to Buffy, Caleb emerged and snapped her neck.
And so, the last Guardian was dead, but she had told Buffy enough. Minutes later, Caleb too would fall, slain by Buffy with the weapon he both feared and coveted. Soon, the power of the Scythe would be used to change the destiny of the Slayers forever. Using the Scythe as a focus, Willow managed to tap into this wellspring of power, the "essence" of the Scythe, and use it to completely change the ways in which evil had been fought for generations. In an instant, the rules that theShadow men had laid down centuries before were changed, and every single girl on Earth with Slayer potential was now a fully-fledged Slayer.
In an instant, Buffy's force of hastily-trained, uneasy potentials became an army of Slayers, all blessed with "strength and skill to fight the vampires, to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their numbers." In an instant, Buffy was no longer alone, that one girl in all the world, and the tide of the seemingly-hopeless battle against an army of Turok-hans ten-thousand strong was no longer so one-sided.
Powers:
The Scythe is a powerful, enchanted weapon. Its full powers remain a mystery to be solved, but it is known that it is linked to a source of great, mystic power. Willow was able to use the Scythe to tap into its power source, and turn every potential Slayer on Earth into true Slayers.
In the hands of anyone with some skill, the Scythe would be a powerful weapon. Strong, lightweight, and perfectly balanced, the Scythe can kill in a number of ways. First, and most obviously, was its blade; curved, and honed to a razor-sharp edge, tapering into a deadly point at each end. Secondly, at the end of its studded-shaft was a polished, hardwood stake. It could bewielded as one would wield a battle-axe, or, using the swordlike hilt opposite its blade, it could be used as a stabbing, saber-like weapon.
The enchantments the Scythe possesses were likely cast upon it as it was being forged, and it was obviously made by craftsmen (or, more likely, craftswomen) centuries ahead of their time. Also, its seems to be completely invulnerable to conventional physical harm. Thus, it's blade can't be dulled or shattered; the stake cannot be broken or splintered.
In addition to being a conduit of vast power, the Scythe also boosts the abilities of any Slayerwielding it, and possibly, to a lesser-extent, of any Slayer in its immediate vicinity. The Scythe was created specifically for Slayers, and they seem to be drawn to it, able to instantly, almost instinctively, wield it as if it were an extension of themselves. Any Slayer wielding the Scythe unconsciously taps into its abilities.
Its stats are as follows:
Damage:
- Axe-blade: 5 x Strength damage
- Stake-blade: 3 x Strength damage, and increases the multiplier for staking by 1.
Benefits:
- + 2/3 Str., Dex., & Con.
- + 1 Willpower (7 total)
- + 17/19 Increased Life Points
- + 1 level of regeneration (Regeneration 2 ; 11 LP per Min)
- + Natural Toughness or 4 AV to 10 AV
The Orb of Hades
A rare and powerful artifact used for Necromancy (a type of Death-Magic). A Necromancer can use an Orb of Hades to magnify the power and range of his spells, and also his willpower. The Orb can also store magical energies indefinitely. Its usefulness is strictly limited to Necromancy. In essence, the Orb is the equivalent of a lens, used to focus and magnify Necromantic spells.
An Orb of Hades is rather ornate, and is typically made of a type of rare, green Obsidian, and some of them are made of Jade. Four bands of sculpted, decorative Bronze are affixed to this inner-sphere. The inner-sphere itself is engraved and painted with images of Hades, done in classic black figure silhouettes, and also bears an inscription, written in Greek, that reads:
"I petition thee, oh Hades, God of the Dead, hear my call. Let those which live not obey the force of my thought and will. May the Dead do as I bid them."
A few of the Orbs have the inscription written in Latin instead, and these are often referred to as the Orb of Pluto. However, they are otherwise the same in both form and function. This inscription is used by the Necromancer to activate the Orb in its initial use and attune it to the caster. Once that is done, the caster need only focus his will upon the Orb to activate or deactivate it. When active, the Orb glows a phosphorescent green that seems to shine from deep within.
A true Orb of Hades also contains a green gemstone that is bound unto the power of the Orb. The Gemstone is made of the same obsidian or jade that forms the Orb itself, and is often worn as a ring or pendant. It is typically hidden within the Orb via a small compartment that can be opened and closed by twisting the top half of the orb in a counterclockwise direction. This Gemstone has the same abilities as the Orb, just to a lesser degree. The Gem can also be used to home in on the Orb from which it came by concentrating on the Orb and saying "seek!". The Gem then pulses when pointed in the direction of the Orb, and the pulsing increases in strength as it gets closer.
While not terribly fragile, the Orb can be dropped and cracked. A cracked Orb can be repaired and will still work, if with some loss of potency. The Orb can be smashed to pieces if necessary, and doing such will deactivate its effects permanently. This is not generally recommended, because such destruction will violently release any energies stored within, an act that could harm any persons nearby.
To prevent an accidental activation, the Orb can be placed within a sealed, padded box (or pouch) made of wood or leather that has been marked, in Greek, with the following: "Be still, oh Hades, let not your vigil be disturbed". However, such a container will not hide the Orb from the Gemstone's homing ability. As such, stealing one is not typically wise.
Other cultures have created similar items, most notable among these being Xolotl's Spear, and Kali's Dagger. However, the Orb of Hades is the most powerful, and the most prized Necromantic totem of its kind.
In-Game Usage: The Orb of Hades bestows upon the caster a +4 to any Necromantic spells, while the Gemstone bestows a +1. The Orb can also store three Necromantic spells for later quick-casting, while the Gemstone can hold a single spell.
